Geological Workshops

CrossLog Cross Sections (1/2 day)

This workshop is designed to provide an overview of CrossLog.  This half day workshop explores Divestco's cross-sectioning software package.  Students attending this course should have a basic geology background and basic computer skills.  Students will learn how to select well from Divestco's data applications; edit, extrapolate and create events; utilize display selection; and model properties options; flatten a model; edit text and add graphics; print well logs and completed cross sections.

GeoCarta Core (1/2 day)

This half day workshop uses a combination of lectures, demonstrations, and hands-on practice to introduce you to the major features of GeoCarta Core.

By the end of the class, you should know how to:

  • Create and work with projects
  • Search for data
  • Refine and filter your results
  • Import and export your data
  • Create and view reports

This workshop introduces you to all the tools available to you within the software and provides you with the knowledge you need to get started.

GeoCarta GIS (1 day)

This full-day workshop uses a combination of lectures, demonstrations, and hands-on practice to introduce you to the major features of GeoCarta GIS.

By the end of the class, you should know how to:

  • Find and label objects on your map
  • Create and work with projects
  • View and search for data
  • Refine and filter your results
  • Import and export your data
  • Create and view reports

This workshop introduces you to all the tools available to you within the software and provides you with the knowledge you need to get started.

Prerequisite: You must have a working knowledge of ArcMap. A portion of this course teaches about using GeoCarta GIS within the ArcMap interface, and it’s assumed that you already know how to use ArcMap.

GeoCarta Tools (1 day)

This full day workshop is designed to introduce the GeoCarta Tools extension for ArcGIS.  The main focus will be on how the GeoCarta Tools work within the ArcGIS environment.  Some basic ArcMap and ArcCatalog functionality will be included that will enable the participants to work with shape files in order to create basic map documents, project data and basic labeling. Participants will experiment with various features of the applications powerful tools including:  the area of interest, tickets and reports and engineering tools.  Importing/exporting capabilities, printing, querying, and basic thematic mapping will also be covered.  The intended audience is engineers, geologists and technologists.  Students should have basic computer skills.

GeoVista (1/2 day)

This half day workshop is designed to give a broad overview of Divestco's data browser and mapping solution to the petroleum industry.  In this workshop you will learn how to access a variety of data including well history, pipeline, land and facility information and how to manipulate it with ease.  You will also learn to query the database; export the data; create projects; navigating and interacting; map customization.  The intended audience is geologists, engineers, land personnel, geophysicist, analysts, production accountants, technologists and oil & gas related personnel.  Students should have basic computer skills.

Intro to Surfer (1/2 day)

Surfer is widely used in the petroleum industry for contouring and 3D surface mapping.  This half-day course gives a brief introduction on how to import geological information and display different types of layers to generate various types of maps.  In hands-on exercises, map attributes will be changes to make more effective base maps, post maps, and bubble maps.  Gridding and contouring principles will be explained, and triangulation, minimum curvature, and kriging procedures will be used to generate contour maps.  Line contour and colour-filled contour maps will be made with different contour intervals, line densities, contour labels, and map scales.  Different map layouts and layering strategies will be discussed to create maps more effectively.  Intended for Technicians, Technologists, and Geologists who need to quickly generate fairly simple geological maps in Surfer.

Surfer: Creating Geological Maps (2 days)

This 2 day comprehensive overview on how to use Surfer to create geological maps for oil and gas applications.  Students will learn how to organize geological data, display grid, culture, and well files to create map layers that can be combined to make base-maps, and post and contour maps.  Basic principles of gridding, triangulation, minimum curvature, and kriging are explained and will be used to generate grids and contours.  The effect of different gridding parameters on the shape of contours is discussed and rules are provided on how to optimize contour maps to reflect specific geological interpretations.  Hans-on excercises on gridding and contouring, trend and residual analysis, isopach mapping, grid to grid operations, grid blanking and contour editing give students the experience to map and contour specific geological features like channels and faults.  Volumetric calculations are performed on structure and isopach maps to complete the course.  This course is intended for Technologists and Geologists who already have some experience using Surfer.  The focus will be on the geological application and interpretation.  Experience with spreadsheets in a Windows enviroment is required.
